  • Why Your Business Needs To Blog

February 23rd, 2009 | Posted by Debra Simpson in Blogs and Blogging

I’ve been waiting for many years for the small business community to see the benefits of blogging. One of the first reactions to any suggestion of blogging was met with “isn’t that something kids do?”

No, it’s not. I spoke last week to the Association of Bridal Consultants in San Diego about using social networking, especially blogging, Facebook and Twitter as a marketing strategy. The single comment I hear most is, “I don’t have time.”

I want to suggest that you look at your competition. Do they have time to blog? If so, they are leaving you in the dust. Why?

Blogs are naturally search engine friendly and a perfect self-publishing tool.

First, search engine friendly….do you know what the traffic to your site is? Do you want more traffic to your site? Do you know how to get more traffic to your site? A blog can be tremendously helpful in driving traffic to your site. The Internet is hungry for fresh content and you could be providing that content, if you blogged.

You don’t need to be a programmer to add fresh content to a blog. Blogs are meant to be self-publishing. With your blog, you can add pictures, video and audio.

You don’t have time?…..There are may tools, like the Firefox AddOn, Scribe, which is what I’m using to write this post.

Where will you get content?….There are many different ways to get content. Subscribing to other blogs for inspiration (which is where this post came from), personal experience, sharing expertise, etc. I could go on and on, and I have…you just need to dig around for the info on this site and my Syndicating Your Content site.

Here’s an article that shares what I feel about blogging, with the exception of using WordPress.com. WordPress.com is a great, free tool, but it has it’s drawbacks just at Blogger.com has it’s drawbacks. My suggestion is to start at one of the free blog platforms, but if you decide you really want to exploit blogging to it’s greatest potential in marketing your business, you’ll want a self-hosted blog like mine.

So here’s my suggestion. Read the linked article.  If you think you want to try blogging, check out WordPress.com or Blogger.com.  If you want to know which would be a better choice for your goals, give me a call or use my contact page to reach me and I’ll help you with that decision.
