The San Diego Business Showcase is being held Thursday, March 11, 2010 at the Del Mar Fairgrounds. The event is sponsored by several of the local Chamber of Commerces and Business Associations in San Diego County.

I spoke with Scott Ashton, Oceanside Chamber of Commerce and Colm Kelly, Smarter Small Business about the expo on North San Diego Business At Large. They shared some of the details of the afternoon, including the drive through free electronic recycling at the event.

Felena Hanson, Perspective Marketing, was my guest. Felena brings over twelve years of marketing and management experience to the table. She’s not only an industry expert but also a marketing professor, author, and international speaker. So, naturally we started our conversation with marketing with an emphasis on small business.

We also discussed the upcoming Business Women’s Mega Mixer, which will be held March 25, 2010. This fundraising event will benefit the Women’s Museum of History and will be held at the Fashion Institute of Design and Merchandising.

These are amazing days. When I started in publishing 20 years ago we were laying out the paper on boards with wax tools and graphic tape. I remember the first time we designed the paper on a Mac. Wow, cutting edge!

A lot has changed. Today we can instantly publish our thoughts, use a blog to write a book, share our views through social sites like Facebook and Twitter. So why not add one more tool to syndicate our message, online radio.

There are two events next week that will help you discover whether a radio show is right for your message. On Monday, January 25, 2010 I’ll be interviewing David Mathison, Be The Media, on citizen journalism. You’ve seen how the Iranians used Twitter to report on the uprising. You see YouTube videos that capture moments in time, from people just like you and me. Mark the interview in your calendar and join me as I ask David to help us become Citizen Journalists.

Then on Thursday, January 28th from 11:30am to 1:00pm, I’ll be speaking to For You Network North County on syndicating your content through online radio. Outrun The Elephant

Wow, it’s the second quarter already.  Where does the time go? I don’t know about you, but I’ve been looking at doing some things differently. I decided to run with North San Diego Business to help you discover the many no-cost and low-cost marketing and business building tools online.

I recently had the opportunity to interview Dana Bristol-Smith, Speak For Success, about the Women’s Leadership Institute and the fundraiser she’s holding for the Institute on Monday, February 23rd.

The Vagina Monologues, directed by Liv Kellgren, featuring Denise Yamada and extraordinary San Diego Women plays at the Lyceum Theatre on Monday, Febuary 23rd.

The Vagina Monologues celebrates women’s sexuality and strength! No in its 11th year, Eve Ensler’s work continues to support local and global communities. The production benefits The Spaek for Success Women’s Leadership Instiutue. Started in 2008 by Dana Briston-Smith, the Institute gives domestic violence survisors professional development training and coaching to help them transform their lives.

Tickets can be purchased by calling 619-544-1000. The Lyceum Theatre is located at 79 Horton Plaza, San Diego. A silent auction begins at 6pm. The play begins at 7:30pm.

You might recognize some of the women starring in this production. Women’s Leadership Institute Video

On Thursday, January 15th, I visited the Civil Rights Museum, the site of Dr. King’s assassination. It was a moving experience.

As we approached the street on which the museum is located, it was a surreal experience to see the Lorraine Motel. I’ve seen it so many times in that infamous photo. To see it in person was extraordinary.

I took the audio tour, which I highly recommend, in the museum. To walk through the slavery exhibit I couldn’t help but wonder how any human being could justify owning another human being. It’s beyond my scope of comprehension.

Moving on the the early years of slavery, through the Civil War era and on to the early 1900′s. The museum houses the bus Rosa Parks rode the day she was arrested, along with images and information about the marches, the attempts to register voters, to the rise of Dr. King as the voice for equality.

Tomorrow I will be watching, in person, the inauguration of our first black President, Barack Obama, and will be rejoicing that Dr. King’s dream is coming to fruition. I only wish he were her to see this day.

There is an interesting event I’ll be attending Wednesday evening, Bloblive, even though it’s in the Gaslamp district at Henry’s Pub. This exciting event begins at 6pm and you’ll be done by 9pm.

Bloblive is about exchanging ideas with your fellow "big thinkers." It’s the perfect time of year to bounce your new ideas and marketing strategies off other small business owners. Who knows what will become of the exchanges and introductions made Wednesday. It could foster your next big money maker for your business.
