Online Marketer Helps Entrepreneurs Tap Into Wealth of Web Tools

By LIZ WIEDEMANN
San Diego Business Journal Staff

Online resources offer small business owners access to “the free stuff,” according to Debra Simpson, and everybody likes free stuff, she says.

Simpson is owner of Magic In Words, a Carlsbad-based Internet marketing business designed to help entrepreneurs increase traffic to their Web sites.

“I spend a lot of time with my clients teaching them online social networking and how to incorporate those Internet tools into their businesses,” said Simpson, who also produces North San Diego Business@Large, a blog dedicated to North San Diego County business news.

“Most people just need to be shown what the tools are and how to use them, and I think I fit that need,” she said.

In regular podcast interviews with local business professionals and as a guest speaker throughout Southern California, Simpson said she teaches low-cost and no-cost forms of marketing online, while creating passive income via sale of information products.

Farrah Douglas Carlsbad City Council Candidate

When I started my first business in 1990, I joined a networking group. The printer was represented by Farrah Douglas, CDS Printing in Carlsbad. I was as impressed with her then, as I am now that I work with her on the Carlsbad Chamber’s Communications Committee.

Farrah is running for the seat being vacated by Julie Nygaard. Farrah and I sat down for an interview I hope you’ll find enlightening. Let me know what you think by commenting below.

February 8th, 2008 by Debra Simpson

760media.com The Ad Agency with Big Ideas

Show Notes

I had the opportunity to sit down with Jeff Donnelley of 760 Media Inc. to discuss marketing and branding for solopreneurs and small business owners. Some of the interesting aspects he covered had to do with branding, and developing a brand for your business. Another upcoming trend we discussed were Web 2.0 and  3.0, which include blogging and podcasting. He’s looking to expand his business by taking his marketing and advertising agency online.

Made To Stick BookAs usual, I asked Jeff what was his one "must have" book and it’s Made to Stick: Why Some Ideas Survive and Others Die, by Chip and Dan Heath.

You’ll find his take on branding, future marketing trends, web 2.0 and 3.0, as well as why you should consider taking your business online. I hope you’ll find a golden nugget or two of information or a strategy that you can use in your small business to take it to the next level. Please feel free to add to the conversation by commenting below.

How To Awaken The Entrepreneur Within

February 1st, 2008 by Barbara Eldridge

Michael Gerber and Debra SimpsonWhat a treat we had today in Carlsbad California! Michael Gerber shared how we could Awaken The Entrepreneur Within.

MP3 File

After 30 years of helping entrepreneurs fix businesses that weren’t working and at an age when most people are retired, San Diego-based small-business guru Michael Gerber is launching a national crusade to spread the gospel of entrepreneurship to America’s major cities.

He’s been called “America’s #1 small business guru,” by Inc. Magazine, is launching a national crusade to spread gospel of entrepreneurship and reveal the reasons behind 99% of all small business failures…and how to prevent the resulting lost opportunities, lost resources, and wasted lives.

“It’s an economic-development issue,” says 71-year old Gerber, who wants to awaken the entrepreneurial spirit he believes exists in all of us. “If we’re going to save our cities, we have to find a way to help more people start new businesses – and succeed.”

Gerber, author of the persistent bestselling E-Myth and E-Myth Revisited is making more than 50 appearances in major cities, including hometown San Diego, between now and the end of next year, to awaken the entrepreneur he says resides within all of us. “This is something we have to do,” he says. “Our economic future depends on it.”

Gerber’s tour is part of a two-pronged effort to spread the “gospel” of entrepreneurship:

• An intense full-day introduction to the entrepreneurial secrets outlined in E-Myth Revisited with a preview of additional insights to be included in his next book, Awaken the Entrepreneur Within You, to be published next year. This happens February 12th at the Town and Country Resort, 500 Hotel Circle North.

• Creation of a local Club Entrepreneur chapter to provide ongoing support for local entrepreneurs. Club E, as its often called, is a highly successful Phoenix-based organization that brings together a blend of college students and seasoned entrepreneurs who leverage each other’s expertise to build new businesses.

Club E grew to more than 800 members in the Phoenix area in its first six months and “has become a powerful force for economic development,” according to Dan Henderson, Economic Development Director for the city of Tempe, a suburb of Phoenix and home of Arizona State University.

“We expect it to be a similar force for economic development in other cities,” says Peter J. Burns III, founder of the Institute for Entrepreneurship and recently named Businessman of the Year by the Arizona chapter of Future Business Leaders of America (FBLA). The institute is the parent organization of Club E and recently licensed the nation’s first College of Entrepreneurship at Grand Canyon University in Phoenix.

Gerber is chairman of the College of Entrepreneurship and is teaming with Burns to build Club E into a national organization to foster successful entrepreneurship throughout the United States.

Gerber says a million new businesses will be started in the United States this year, but four out of five will close within five years and only four out of 100 will still be around after 10.

“Most small businesses fail because people start them for the wrong reasons and go about doing it the wrong way,” Gerber says. “There’s a myth, the E-Myth, that small businesses are started by entrepreneurs risking capital to make a profit. The real reasons most people start businesses have little to do with entrepreneurship. Creating a successful business is a learnable, replicable experience anyone can go through.”Michael Gerber Awakening The Entrepreneur Within

And, while he’s focusing on the United States for now, Gerber ultimately wants to take his crusade worldwide – including the poorest of Third World countries. He models his dream of spreading the gospel of entrepreneurship worldwide on the work of Muhammad Yunus, called “the banker to the poor” who started a Third World economic-development revolution by lending money to the poor.

“Yunus started by lending $27 to a group of poor women in Bangladesh so they could buy bamboo to make and sell stools,” Gerber says. “Before long, they were able to repay the loans while supporting themselves and their families. I want to awaken the entrepreneurial spirit that will help people start successful new businesses.”

The one-day intensive runs from 9 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. and costs $249 if you register before February 2nd. Registration is available at www.michaelgerberevents.com or by calling toll-free 1-888-881-1001. However, Michael has agreed to extend the Chamber pricing for the February 12th event, which is $149.  When you visit his link to register for the Feb. 12th event, in the box "how did you hear about us" please fill in North San Diego Business. Click Here to download the event flyer with the "secret code" for the discounted pricing.

Then let me know you’ll be joining me on February 12th, were we will be "Awakening The Entrepreneur Within."

Women Bloggers to Watch in 2008

January 10th, 2008 by Debra Simpson

Debra Simpson Women Bloggers to Watch in 2008I had the distinct pleasure of being named one of the Women Bloggers to Watch in 2008. It’s always nice to be recognized by your peers. I’ve been touting blogging since February of 2005, when I started my first blog over at Blogger. I can’t tell you how many times I’ve seen eyes glaze over and roll to the back of heads. What is blogging?  Only kids blog, right? Finally, blogging arrives as a business tool.

You ask me why would anyone want to blog? Because, there’s Magic In Blogging. It’s an instant self publishing platform. More importantly, search engine spiders love it. In fact, that’s exactly how I discovered I was on this esteemed list, a Google New Alert (link to how-to video on Google News Alerts), which you should be using too. Anyway, I digress…

Let me share with you why blogging is so beneficial to a business.  Let’s say I visited your site a month ago, I saw what I saw and I read what I read. If I visit your site today, will I see what I saw and read what I read? Will anything be different?  If not, why should I come back to your site?

The two most popular free blogging platforms are Blogger and WordPress. You can start there.  Here’s a document that shares the differences between these two popular free platforms. If you already have one of those two free services, still check out Magic In Blogging where you’ll find how-tos. If you want a totally robust blog like North San Diego Business, check out Magic In Blogging, where you can have blog software installed and programmed for your site.

Blogging is here. It’s an essential asset to any business web presence. Think about embracing it!

Here is the actual post:

Women are blogging in record numbers these days - so may blogs, so much content and so little time to check them all out. Each month during 2008, I will be highlighting dozens of blogs written by women, on a variety of topics, genres and locations around the globe. These women share one thing in common. They have a goal, a theme and a purpose in their lives. Please do stop by their blogs, check them out, leave a comment and see how many great relationships you can develop online in the next 12 months.

Euphlotea, Has It’s Time Come?

November 9th, 2007 by Debra Simpson

Euphlotea.com

MP3 File

I recently interviewed Adam Englund, Euphlotea’s President. We spoke about his vision to build a floating airport to serve San Diego County. I hope you find it as informative as I. Please leave your comments below.

Adam brings three decades of environmental activism, visionary engineering, critical legal analysis and transportation advocacy to his position as the promoter of San Diego’s International Offshore Floating Airport.

Englund’s inspiration was born at the Oceanic Institute in Waimanalo, Hawaii, where, in 1971, a futuristic development project called "Hawaii’s Floating Cities Program" caught his imagination. Eight years later, after graduating from the University of Pacific, Englund wrote his International Law thesis at Cambridge University on the jurisdictional and administrative issues raised by artificial islands and floating cities.

Englund’s vision of oceanic development contingent on environmental protection embraces both the inevitability of open ocean colonization by humans and the consequent need for enlightened regulation. Accordingly, when San Diego’s search for a site for the development of a new international airport found little consensus and even less support for any one land-based alternative, Englund realized that the time for the founding of Euphlotea was upon him.

"We have reached that critical moment in time when real estate values in this region - both in terms of tangible dollars and in terms of environmental preservation and quality of life have exceeded the economic and environmental costs of locating an international airfield in the open ocean," says Englund. "All of a sudden the economic mandate for a world class airport facility has intersected with the existing, practical and cost effective technologies available to build and operate the facility offshore."

Adam EnglundEnglund’s legal career began in Los Angeles, where he focused on entertainment law; since arriving in Encinitas in 1997, his practice has evolved to general business and intellectual property transactions. In Los Angeles, he also was a leader of environmentally sound transportation initiatives through both public agencies and private organizations.

Englund lives with his wife, Victoria and daughter, Arielle in Encinitas. A former mountain bike racer, he now enjoys surfing, running on and cleaning up the beach.
